Job Description
We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our educational team and support deaf or hard-of-hearing students in a K-12 setting. As a Sign Language Interpreter, you will play an essential role in ensuring that students can fully participate in class activities, communicate with their peers, and engage with teachers and staff. Your work will be crucial in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, helping to bridge communication gaps and promote the educational and social success of students with hearing impairments.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for deaf or hard-of-hearing students in classroom settings, ensuring clear and effective communication.
Facilitate communication between students and teachers, staff, and peers during lessons, discussions, and school activities.
Support the social integration of students by interpreting non-academic conversations and interactions.
Collaborate with educators and staff to ensure the accessibility and success of students with hearing impairments.
Maintain a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards in all interpreting duties.
Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with best practices in ASL interpreting and education.
Qualifications:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and proficiency in English.
EIPA score of 3.5+ and valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL).
Previous experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in a K-12 educational setting.
A strong understanding of deaf culture and sensitivity to the unique needs of students with hearing impairments.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team.
Empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for supporting students with hearing impairments in their educational journey.
